UN Speaks Out About Human Rights in Iraq Print E-mail
After the scandal at Abu-Ghraib and the death of an unarmed Iraqi by a US solider in a mosque, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed grave concerns about the treatment of civilians in the mist of the war. The Commissioner, Louise Arbour, called on all sides of the conflict to ensure the safety of civilians, this in keeping with international law.

Spokeperson José Diaz iterated: "All violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law must be investigated and those responsible for breaches - including deliberate targeting of civilians, indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks, the killing of injured persons and the use of human shields - must be brought to justice, be they members of the Multinational Force or insurgents."
